Ecuador BIO
Ecuador's climate is subtropical and the vegetation is diverse. The highlands and the humid forests in Puyango offer ideal conditions for growing Arabica coffee under shady trees and ensure the preservation of biodiversity. The 680 small coffee farmers in Puyango have formed an association called PROCAP "Asociación Agroartesanal de Productores de Café Altura Puyango". The cultivated area has a size of 2500 ha and the annual production is about 1000 bags of 60 kg each per year. PROCAP supports the cultivation of the Arabica type "Typica", which is optimally adapted to the climatic conditions of the region, requires only minimal fertilization and produces an excellent coffee. In order to comply with the ecological criteria, the farmers have developed an efficient compost production, which allows natural nutrients to be returned to the ecosystem. The aim of the coffee farmers in Puyango is to produce washed high quality Arabica beans of homogeneous quality without destroying the surrounding ecosystem, while at the same time creating a solid economic base for their families in the future.
